All for Charity

The past week has been really busy! My brother, my Mum, our friend Alison and I are setting up a charity called Glasgow Dialysis Patient Support Fund. As most of my friends will know, my brother, Blair, was diagnosed with kidney failure when he was 21. He used to get dialysis at Stobhill hospital in Glasgow but now he has his own snazzy dialysis room in his flat so my mum and I help him do his dialysis. He added up the amount that the NHS had spent on him, with his dialysis and all his medicines and it added up to more than £70,000!!! And thats per year! So the NHS isn't that bad! Blair was keen to give back to the hospital so we all set about starting the charity. Anyway, this weekend was our first fundraiser and it couldn't have gone better. All our hard work and planning came together in the end and thanks to everyone who came and everyone who donated the amazing raffle and auction prizes we raised an amazing £5638!!!! There were a few tears on the night as we didn't expect to raise so much and we were all so shocked!

Now where the cupcakes come in....... we put together 100 goodie bags for our guests which included various promotional items from businesses and leaflets about organ donation and a cupcake! As I have been very busy studying and working my Mum helped bake the cakes and I iced them all on Saturday morning. We got these great little pods to keep them all in and they looked really good.

Here are some more photos from the night.........

And another thing, I had my very last class at Uni last week! Our lecturer, Carmen, made some yummy tapas for us all and all the other students brought in food and wine so we could have a party. Here are the cupcakes that I brought in,

I still have my exams to do, and my first one is tomorrow so I better get back to my studying!

A New Chapter

So I haven't written a blog in nearly a year but Thursday is my last ever class at uni so now that I'm finished with that I'm going to start putting all my spare time into growing my business and I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't got a graduate job lined up or anything which everyone seems to be worrying about apart from me! I've never been the organised type, and I'm just doing what feels like the right thing for me at the moment. So, as I said a lot of my spare time will be put into expanding Sweetie Cupcakes. I've got a few things lined up so far but I'm keeping that a secret for now! Because I haven't blogged in sooooooo long, I have a ton of pictures of cakes that I have made over the past year so here's a selection of my favourites :)

This was the giant cupcake I made for my Dad's birthday. It was my first time making animals out of fondant and I was really pleased with how they turned out.

A chocolate ladybird cake made for one of the cutest wee girls I know. I loved making this cake and it was filled with lots of yummy ganache

This was made for a hairdressers opening night. It was a big of a last minute cake but it turned out well!

This one was for my Auntie Frances' birthday. I wanted to try making a bow out of fondant and it had little cracks  in it but good for a first attempt :)

This cake travelled to Edinburgh. I love the red and white colours here.

New baby cupcakes! I ordered molds to make baby hands and feet (sounds creepy!) but they never arrived in time so these were improvised.

Cute little octopus!

This was the first giant cupcake I ever made, it took 3 attempts to get it right!

These were my cupcake bouquets for Mother's day. It was the busiest day/night I have ever had because I got loads of orders for these!

More Mother's day cupcakes

Mini egg cupcakes for Easter! I loved these because I put a mini egg into the middle of the sponge so when the cupcake was hot there was a melted chocolate egg in the middle, yum!

So that was a small selection of my favourite cupcakes since my last blog...there's tons more photos on my facebook page

Another thing I am going to start doing once my exams are over is trying a new recipe every week (maybe every 2 weeks) so that I can put together a menu of more exciting flavour combinations... so watch this space!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Apologies for my lack of blogging. Since I wrote my first blog I have moved back home from Spain (tear) and I have been so busy! Firstly obviously unpacking, secondly I have bought a flat, I have also gone back to work part time, I help with my brothers dialysis and finally I have been putting every minute of the (little) spare time I have into coming up with new ideas for my cupcakes and getting my business of the ground.

I couldn't wait to get back from Spain and back into the kitchen to make more cupcakes. The first cupcakes I made were for my Mum's office. A very last minute order but as always I got them done on time.

They were quite simple but I think they turned out well :)

The next cupcakes I made were to hand round to shops in the local area as a sample so they could recommend me to their customers and display my business cards in their shops.

I was so pleased the way these turned out. I had never tried the rose swirl before and I made the little roses and butterflies myself. The roses were a bit of a nightmare at the beginning but once I got into the swing of it they became much easier. The next photo is of the same cake but in a cute little cupcake holder I bought from Amazon and it was a bargain at £4!
I got really good feedback from all of these cakes so hopefully I will get a few orders out of it!

Next, it was Fathers Day. I'm in the bad books with my Dad for not making him any cupcakes but he was away in Portugal so I have made some for him tonight. My best friend Hollie text me the day before Fathers Day so I came to her rescue and made her these cupcakes.
I have decided to call these Retro Cupcakes. I love the giant jazzie on top and added a little popping candy as a wee bit extra. I'm always worried that the cupcakes I made are very girly but I think these ones are perfect for Dads or even a wee boys birthday party.

The next cupcakes I made were possibly my favourite yet. They were for a Strawberry Tea and I loved making the cute little strawberries for the toppers.
When I delivered them and set them up on the stand people were taking photos of them which is always a good sign!

And finally............ I have an order from a friend for some formula one cupcakes. At first I was thinking of making chequered flags but then I decided I would have a go at making some cars from fondant. They turned out much better than I thought although it did take me a whole hour to make just 3 cars but the end result was well worth it.

I can't wait to get these onto the cupcakes on Saturday!

I think that is enough for tonight, I hope you have enjoyed reading about and looking at all my new creations.

My First Blog :)

Okay I'll be the first to admit that I'm no use at writing, I'm useless at spelling and after living in Spain for the past year I can hardly even speak in plain English. So why am I writing a blog? I have 2 more weeks left in Spain and when I come home I will be starting my own business making beautiful hand-decorated cupcakes for all to enjoy. So basically my blog is to keep you all up to date on how my business is going and to show you all my creations.

The last time I was home for a wee holiday I was asked to make cupcakes for Kirkhill Primary School's summer fayre. I was really excited and happy that I had been asked because being in Spain I hadn't baked cupcakes for a lonnnnng time (I have no oven) so I was missing that and also it was a great opportunity for me to get my name out there and show off my skills.... and hopefully get a few orders! It was a very last minute thing... I came home from Spain on a Thursday and by the Saturday morning I had to have 96 cupcakes all ready to go. It was stressful and it was the first time I had ever done something like that, there were a lot of "hiccups" ....... business cards not being delivered on time, running out of icing sugar running out of oreos but all in all it was a great day and all my cupcakes were sold out! Here is a picture of the final result which I was pretty pleased with :) On the bottom tier are oreo cupcakes, the next tier are cookie cupcakes, the next are vanilla cupcakes and the next two tiers are "99" Cupcakes.

I came back to Spain the next day on a high after getting so much good feedback from everyone who had one of my cupcakes and the next week I got a message from one of my Mum's friends, Alison, saying she had an order for me! Not just any order .... an order for around 60 cupcakes for a charity event with a blood/red theme. So here I am trying to think of as many ideas as possible for this and so far I have a few things in mind. I don't want to make any kind of gory cupcakes so I think what I'm going to do is a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting decorated with lots of red hearts, roses and daisies. I hope the end result will fit in with the event and look classy as this is my first paying order I want to get it exactly right. The event is on the 12th of June so I have quite a bit more time to get my thinking cap on and see what else I can come up with but I will keep you posted! Hope you enjoyed reading my first blog and a bit about what I'm doing at the moment.
